For our site this year we returned once again to the South Bank in London. We did not start by specifying a brief and expecting each student to solve the problems it raised. We intended the opposite: that students formulate a strategy for dealing with use, space, and environment, based on their experiences and interests, and apply them to the site. Ideas were worked out in sketches, drawings, and models at various scales - the whole site, the individual building, and the detail. We tested our proposals against our recollections and recorded experiences, and in technical studies.
