Degree Unit G 1997/98

Unit G continued its preoccupation with urban space in a project at a site at Hermitage Wharf, Wapping. The project continued a line of inquiry - started last year in the Royal Docks - into the design of buildings and the spaces around them in a particular urban context. It was intended that the project accept the current proposed uses of the site - as housing and community facilities - but to challenge current preconceptions of public and private space to design a new and appropriate fragment of the city. The project was supported by studies of public space in Soho and private space in the Goldfinger House, as well as detailed studies of space and materials in Wapping. The Unit Trip was to Mexico to experience urban life in Mexico City and Oaxaca and to study the work of Luis Barragan.
