Design Sketch
Studio in Blackness
The Blackness Conservation Area includes beautiful late-19th century and early-20th century mill buildings, now fallen into disuse but with ruin exacerbated by poor planning policies for what is supposed to be the 'Blackness Conservation Area'. This study was for a studio which would be equal in strength of character to the surrounding buildings.

Design Sketch
I proposed that the north-light roofs be supported by 2 sets of steel columns: a row of thin columns separating the circulation area form the work area, and a row of 'T' shaped columns, less frequent but larger, in the work area.

Design Sketch
This sketch shows 2 important parts of the design linked together: a large window to break down the barrier between inside and outside, to give a public face to the work carried out inside, and a sequence of spaces from the entrance door into the studio, passing the staircase to the upper floor.
