Charles Booth: Poverty Map of London 1886-1903
Review of Mapping London: Making Sense of the City
by Simon Foxell (Black Dog Publishing 2007)
Architectural Research Quarterly 2010
A quote from the review:
Charles Booth's Descriptive Map of London Poverty (1889) tellingly shows the opposite - that large parts of the East End and South London were inhabited by the "Middle class. Well-to-do." and even more by the "Fairly comfortable. Good ordinary earnings." before any street corner was turned into the "Very poor, casual. Chronic want." and "Lowest class. Vicious, semi-criminal."... Today these areas would be considered lucky to have this mixture.
